Angela from the Green’s School Initative visited our school and talked to us about road safety. We talked about the importance of wearing high visibility jackets when walking, running or cycling on the road. High visibility jackets help us to be seen and keep us safe. Muinteóir Jennifer gave us a high visibility jacket earlier in the year and we practiced walking through the town and crossing roads safely, using the Safe Cross Code! Angela asked us to bring our bike helmets into school and we discussed why we wear a helmet. Angela helped us to adjust our helmets so that they fit just right.

It was St. Patrick’s Day in Newmarket. It was a sunny, dry day. All the people were dressed in green and they were very excited about the parade.
The boys from Newmarket Boys School were dressed in a snake costume. They had to move the sticks in the snake up and down. The snake was very long and it had lots of colours. The boys had to work together to make the snake move.
At 12 o clock the parade started. The parade left the school and walked up through the town. After a while the boys started to feel tired because the snake was heavy. Suddenly some of the sticks broke and the snake fell apart! The boys started to worry. What would they do?
Eventually M. Humphrey came up with an idea. He told the boys in the snake to use their hands to move the snake up and down. The boys tried it and it worked!
The boys were very happy that afternoon.

Kenning Poetry is a poem made of two word phrases describing a person or thing without using its actual name.
It comes from Old English or Norse poetry which was made up of joining Kennings. Although kennings follow a list structure they could be described as free verse in other respects as they rarely rhyme.

Lá amháin í dtús an fómhair, bhí mé dul ag go dtí an bhaile. Chuaigh mé amach an doras agus thosaigh mé ag siúl í dtreo an bhaile.
Ar an tslí chonaic mé ticeád ar an dtalamh. Phioc mé suas agus scríob mé an ticeád agus leath mo shúile nuair a chonaic mé trí reálta. Rith mé abhaile ar nós na gaoithe agus tar eís tamaill shroich mé mo theach. Chuaigh mé isteach agus thaispeáin mo ticeád do mo mhamaí, bhí sí sona sásta agus chuamar isteach sa chárr.
Thosaigh sí ag tiomáint go dtí an oifig an phoist agus niorbh fhada go raibh mé isteach sa bhaile arís. Tar éis tamaill tháinig mé amach agus bhí súil agam go raibh mé ar an teilifís ag an deireadh seachtaine. An lá dar gcionn bhí mé ag feáchaint ar an teilifís agus is beag nach thit mé i laige nuair a tháinig mo ainm amach. Cúpla lá ina dhiadh sin déirigh mé go moch ar maidin agus chuaigh mé agus mo chlann go dtí an stiúideo telifíse. Bhí mé neirbhíseach ach bhí mo chlann sa lucht feáchana agus bhí mé ceart go leor. Bhí eadaí galánta orthu agus tar éis tamaill thosaigh an chluiche. Bhuaigh mé fiche míle euro, carr nua agus saoire sa Fhrainc. An thráthnóna sin bhí mé tuirseach traochta shuigh mé síos os comhair an tine agus dúirt mé, ‘nach bréa an saol atá agam’.
Chodail mé go sámh agus ní dheanfaidh mé dearmad ar an lá sin go deo na ndeor.
